About Yokoseura
Umi no Eki Funabansho is located in Yokoseura, a town in the northern Nishisonogi Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture.
The town was opened as a trading port in the 16th century and prospered.
At that time, Portuguese trading ships entered the port, and many merchants and Jesuit missionaries came to Japan to preach Christianity.
A church was built near the harbor and the feudal lord, Sumitada Omura also became a Christian. However, the town did not prosper for long—it was destroyed by civil war about a year after the opening of the port.
Today, there is a park in Yokoseura. The park has a statue of Luís Fróis, a Jesuit missionary who visited the area in 1563, and an observatory built to resemble a church.
From Umi no Eki Funabansho, you can also see Hachinokojima Island with its white cross, which was once a landmark for foreign trading ships entering the port, as well as the port town scenery.
